Who is MOVES?

we make moves everyday, literally! Founded in 2022, we’re a cutting-edge publication, redefining how movement and culture are portrayed in editorial media.

For us, movement is more than physical motion — it fuels our creative lens, influences our artistic decisions, shapes our unique visual style.

Meet the team

We draw on the expertise of a diverse and culturally aware team of creatives, each with a rich background in both dance and media. The blend of backgrounds builds a unique perspective that informs our work — creating media that is authentic, culturally relevant, and visually impactful.

  • Founder & Creative Director

Hello movers! I’m Shokirie, the founder, editor-in-chief, and creative director of MOVES Magazine.

Dance has always been part of my life, and as I grew, so did my appreciation for the art form. Yet, I couldn’t help but notice the widespread undervaluing of dancers and dance culture. It became clear to me that the cultural and artistic representation of dance was often overlooked—both within the industry and beyond.

As a lover of fashion, music and art, I’ve always seen dance as deeply connected to these creative worlds. I longed for a platform that would recognise and celebrate this relationship. That desire to amplify the voice of dance, and the people behind it, fuelled my drive to create a space that honours the art, culture, and community while inspiring change.

My career spans both creative and commercial realms. I’ve spent nearly a decade in front of the camera as a signed model, and the past five years behind it as a creative director, photographer, videographer, and graphic designer. Along the way, I also earned a BA in Architecture from the Manchester School of Architecture, and have trained as a dancer and remained engaged with the dance community throughout.

These collective experiences shaped the foundation of MOVES. My mission is for us to become the leading cultural voice of dance, celebrating its artistry, its influence, and its capacity to cross borders and move the world.

The Art, The Artists, The Culture

Through the lens of movement art, MOVES is shaped by three core pillars: the art, the artists, and the culture:

  • The Art | Showcased through creative editorials and visionary concepts.

  • The Artists | Celebrated through in-depth profiles and features.

  • The Culture | Unpacked through cultural stories, conversations, and thought-provoking articles.

The Reason

MOVES seeks to elevate the visual representation of dance, by spotlighting how the extraordinary abilities of dancers contribute to the world of visual arts.

The Purpose

Above all, MOVES exists to elevate the value of dancers. We highlight the complexity of dance training and culture. Through research, knowledge, and cross-disciplinary exploration, we aspire to inform and inspire art across borders.
